Jed Orrison, in Fall 2010, produced two documents explaining “massive astrophysical compact halo objects (MACHOs), specifically their detection by the gravitational lensing that they produce.” As a physics majors, these objects and their detection were clear to him but presented serious challenges to his target readers – readers of the Science Times (the Tuesday special section of The New York Times) and of Sky & Telescope. Jed combines careful explanation and helpful visual diagrams to help his readers completely new to the topic (Science Times readers) and those slightly more familiar with astrophysics (Sky & Telescope readers) to understand his points.
